Patna:
Amid a nationwide blackout against the alleged gang rape and murder of a 20-year-old woman in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit teenager in the Gaya district of Bihar, who is at the polls, died by suicide on Friday after she was allegedly gang-raped by four men, police said.
According to the police, the girl’s parents have filed a gang rape case in which they name three of the four defendants as Rahul Kumar, Chintu Kumar and Chandan Kumar. The fourth defendant remains unidentified, police said.
According to sources, the autopsy on the body was performed at Gaya Medical College and the results are awaited.
The case comes shortly after the alleged gang rape and murder of a Dalit woman by four men from a so-called “upper caste” community in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh.
Hathras’ victim died Tuesday at a Delhi hospital. She suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a severe spinal injury when she was attacked by four men from her village on September 14. Police said she had a wound on her tongue because she had bitten it when the men tried to strangle her.
The handling of the case by the Uttar Pradesh police, including the delay in filing a rape case and night cremation without the consent or presence of the family, has snowballed into a political issue that it will probably cast its shadow over the three-phase Bihar. Elections to the assembly as of October 28.
Opposition parties including Congress and the RJD are likely to corner Bihar’s ruling coalition led by Nitish Kumar Yadav over women’s safety, atrocities against Dalits, the three controversial farm bills passed by the President amid continued opposition from farmers who are still in protest, his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and migration crisis.
