Bihar’s campaign, which includes large-scale political demonstrations, comes after the Center relaxed the ban on large gatherings in October in light of the upcoming holiday season. The final details were left to the states.
Today, a dispute broke out in Madhya Pradesh when the Gwalior court of the Madhya Pradesh High Court imposed strict restrictions on physical rallies and election meetings in nine districts in light of the pandemic.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the state will approach the Supreme Court “to seek justice”, pointing to the example of Bihar and the rest of Madhya Pradesh, where political demonstrations are taking place in full swing.
Crossing party lines, the campaign in Bihar is accompanied by severe laxity in coronavirus security measures. Thousands of people have been gathering at the rally sites without social distancing. Few wear masks.
The BJP has made the promise of free Covid vaccines as part of its electoral manifesto, a move that has drawn criticism on social media. Although there is a worldwide race for a vaccine, there is little hope of having one on the market before next year.
