PATNA: Portfolios were allocated among Nitish Kumar’s cabinet members in Bihar on Tuesday and the prime minister retained key departments such as the home he had occupied in the previous government.
Other portfolios left with the prime minister are the general administration, the cabinet secretary and the election, in addition to “any other unassigned departments among other members of the council of ministers,” according to a notice issued by Raj Bhavan.
Senior Deputy Minister Tar Kishore Prasad received finance, business taxes, environment, forestry and climate change, and information technology, all of which were previously in the hands of his predecessor, Sushil Kumar Modi.
Additionally, Prasad will maintain disaster management and urban development portfolios.
Renu Devi, the second deputy CM, will take care of raj panchayati, other backward classes, extremely backward classes and industries.
Both the CM deputies, such as Sushil Kumar Modi, belong to the BJP which has returned with a higher count in the elections to the assembly than the JD (U) of Kumar and the same is reflected in the composition of the new cabinet.
A 14-member council of ministers was sworn in here by Governor Phagu Chauhan on Monday and the BJP secured seven seats. Five ministers were from the JD (U), while one was from two smaller allies: the Hindustani Awam Morcha and the Vikassheel Insaan Party.
Mangal Pandey, a senior BJP leader who was Minister of Health in the previous government, has retained the key portfolio. In addition, he was in charge of the art, culture and youth and road construction departments.
The former minister of the road construction department, Nand Kishore Yadav, another BJP veteran who was not appointed as a minister this time, is expected to be appointed Speaker during the assembly session next week.
Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, a JD (U) leader who was president in the previous assembly, has been assigned the department of parliamentary affairs, rural works, rural development, water resources, and information and public relations.
Ashok Choudhary, Acting President of JD (U) s State, has preserved building construction in addition to obtaining science and technology, welfare and minority affairs.
Bijendra Prasad Yadav, former head of state unit of JD (U), has maintained power, prohibition and excise, in addition to obtaining planning and development, and protection of food and consumers.
Mewa Lal Chaudhary, a multi-term JD (U) MLA who has been inducted into the ministry for the first time, received an education, while Sheela Kumar, who was sworn in on her election debut, received transportation.
