Tej Pratap Yadav, eldest son of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) boss Lalu Prasad and former health minister, won the Hasanpur constituency on Tuesday, according to the Election Commission of India, by defeating Janata Dal (United) sitting in the MLA Raj Kumar Ray.
Tej Pratap won by a margin of 21,139 votes against Ray in Hasanpur, where Yadavs and Muslims are in the majority, the Election Commission website showed. Ray had defeated Binod Choudhary of the BLSP in the Bihar assembly elections in 2015 by a margin of 29,600 votes.

Hasanpur, a stronghold of RJD, was considered a safe seat for Tej Pratap, as it has a considerable number of Yadav and Muslim minority voters, as well as the programmed caste community, the party’s traditional voting base. RJD sources had said that another important factor behind Tej Pratap’s constituency change was based on feedback that the 32-year-old legislator had a low win ratio in Mahua, as a section of voters, mainly Yadavs, did not she was happy with him. .

Tej Pratap’s decision to divorce his wife Aishwariya Rai in November 2018 and Rai’s accusation that she was mistreated have left the party’s main voters disgruntled, people familiar with the details said. “There are family reasons behind Tej Pratap’s decision to move to Hasanpur,” said a senior RJD leader close to the head of RJD.
Hasanpur was among 94 out of 243 seats, who voted in the second phase of voting in the Bihar assembly elections.
