InsideSport.co had previously reported that 8 ground crew members had tested positive on Friday, but now BCCI sources confirmed the number rose to 10. “Yes, yesterday there were 8 positive cases in regards to ground personnel. Today two more positive cases have emerged and the 10 have been sent back home and are isolated ”.
“We are bringing fresh earth personnel from the Mumbai CA plant in Kandivali for preparations”, according to a senior MCA official.
Not only this, but now, around 8 members of the event management team have also tested positive for COVID-19 and have been sent to isolation.
“Yes, that’s correct, between 8 and 10 members of the event staff also tested positive.”, a BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport
IPL 2021: BCCI in solution as Star Sports broadcaster also raises the red flag, Devdutt Padikkal and Axar Patel test positive
InsideSport has reliably learned from its sources at both BCCI and Star Sports, that the broadcaster is also extremely concerned about the deterioration of the Covid-19 situation in Mumbai. The source further told InsideSport that top brass at the official broadcaster contacted BCCI on Saturday morning and explained their concerns.
“Star is concerned about his broadcast equipment. If the ground crew and the event management team become infected with Covid-19, the same can happen to the Star crew. They should be closely associated with the ground crew and the event team. That is why Star is very concerned about the situation ”, the BCCI source told InsideSport.
When a senior BCCI official was asked about the situation, he admitted that the BCCI is genuinely concerned.
“Look, even if there is a lockdown, the teams are in bio-bubbles and it is also a closed-door event. So we are still confident that the IPL games in Mumbai will take place on schedule with the Delhi Capitals playing Chennai Super Kings on April 10 on the second day of the tournament.
“But Hyderabad and Indore are there waiting in case the situation gets out of control,” the office manager told PTI on Saturday.
Indore and Hyderabad have remained as waiting places for the IPL in case the COVID situation gets out of control. Mumbai is slated to host 10 cash-rich league games.
With more than 47,000 cases on Friday, Maharashtra is considering a possible mini-lockdown situation. Of equal concern to the organizers is the number of ground staff at Wankhede which increases from 8 to 10 between Friday night and Saturday morning.
IPL 2021: Mumbai-based teams are also very concerned about the situation
As of now, none of the teams currently in Mumbai (Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings) have access to Wankhede.
“Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, for example, take turns training at Brabourne Stadium and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) field. KKR is training in Navi Mumbai at the DY Patil before leaving for Chennai. “ the official reported.
The BCCI medical unit is expected to improve the testing rate due to the increase in cases in the state. The event management and operations of IPL until last year was handled by IMG, but as of this year, the board is managing the event on its own.
“We have enough support staff to handle, as we had taken into account that the situation in Mumbai is dire at the moment. But yes, we are closely monitoring the situation ”. added the official.
