“The death toll has risen to eight in the incident of the Bhiwandi building collapse. Five more people have been rescued,” Thane Municipal Corporation spokesman said according to the ANI news agency. News18 has learned that a notice was issued to repair the 30-year-old building and city authorities had called for the building to be vacated.

So far, five people, including a child, have been rescued after the building collapsed early Monday, police told the PTI news agency, adding that search operations are underway. Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) personnel were seen pulling a child out of the rubble and giving her water. Bhiwandi is a motorized loom town about 10 km from Thane.

Notice issued to repair the building: Bhiwandi Municipal Commissioner | Bhiwandi Municipal Commissioner Dr. Pankaj Asiya told News 18 that eight people were killed and 11 injured in the building collapse. The preliminary cause of the collapse is not yet known, he said. He added that the now collapsed building is 30 years old and a notice was issued to repair it. Municipal authorities had asked for the building to be cleared.
