Comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa received a magistrate’s court on Monday afternoon, November 23. Both were arrested by the Office of Narcotics Control for alleged possession and use of marijuana and were sent to judicial custody on November 22. After this, the court ordered that Bharti Singh be transferred to Kalyan Prison, while Haarsh Limbachiyaa was sent to Taloja Prison. .
Bharti and Haarsh were granted bail of INR 15,000 according to the court order. Shortly after bail was granted, the two were seen leaving for home accompanied by family members.
The couple’s lawyer, Ayaz Khan, said “the NCB has not yet filed a response. A notice was sent to them on Sunday.” He also mentioned that in this case, the maximum penalty that can be imposed in this case is imprisonment of up to 1 year or a fine or both, as deemed by the court.
On Saturday, NCB raided his home and production office and found 86.5 grams in his Andheri apartment. Post this, they were detained and taken in for questioning and the couple agreed to use marijuana.
At the time of the arrest, an NCB official had confirmed that the couple had been registered under the provisions of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). The search began after the team received information about Ganja’s possession, and after the investigation, the team seized 86.5 g from his residence. The search was with respect to research on the drug used by members of the entertainment fraternity.
NCB officials in a statement said that the amount they hold is in a “small amount” and not the “commercial amount”, which according to the NDPS law is up to 1,000 g. If found guilty, the defendant could face a jail term of up to six months and a fine of INR 10,000.
