Calcutta:
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar today inaugurated the launch of Covaxin’s phase 3 regulatory trial at ICMR-NICED in Kolkata, praising the country’s leadership in “effectively addressing” the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dhankhar said the NICED (National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases) has been chosen as one among two dozen centers in the country for the third phase of the trial of the indigenously developed coronavirus vaccine, and expressed confidence that the procedure will go smoothly.
“India has done admirably well (when it comes to handling the pandemic). It’s all down to the country’s visionary leadership,” he said.
The governor further said that the Center’s Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides free health services, has provided help to many amid the crisis.
In particular, the plan has not been implemented so far in West Bengal.
Trinamool’s congressional government had said in September that it would implement the scheme if funds for the program are sent through the state administration, contrary to provisions established by the Center.
