Bharat Bandh: Punjab, Maharashtra and UP Among States To Be Affected by Strike by Farmers’ Unions


Farmers’ unions across the country have called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ in view of the passage of controversial farm bills in Parliament. The Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Trinamool Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal are among the 18 opposition parties that support the call for a national shutdown.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), All India Farmers Union (AIFU), All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) and All India Kisan Mahasangh (AIKM) are among the ten unions that have called for closure.

While the border between Delhi and Haryana is likely to be sealed, a three-hour roadblock will be observed in Punjab from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Farmers have been protesting for weeks in these states blocking road and rail traffic and hampering the supply of essential goods. “Nothing will work in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh on Friday,” said Bharatiya Kisan Union President Rakesh Takait.

The three agricultural bills approved by Parliament are: the bill on trade and promotion of agricultural agricultural products (promotion and facilitation); Farmers Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Assurance; and the Agricultural Services Bill and the Commodity Bill (Amendment).
