Several BJP leaders used Bhagyanagar’s name when tweeting about updates to the GHMC election count on Friday. After the results that placed BJP in second position in the local Hyderabad poll, ahead of the local AIMIM party, were announced, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to Twitter and fanned the name row. saying, “The fate of Bhagyanagar is increasing.” He mentioned Hyderabad as he referred to the elections, but referred to the people as “the people of Bhagyanagar” and thanked them for showing confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.
Adityanath was in Hyderabad as part of BJP’s star-studded campaign. “” Some people asked me if Hyderabad’s name could be changed to Bhagyanagar. I said – why not? I told them that we renamed Faizabad as Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj after the BJP came to power. Why can’t Hyderabad be renamed to Bhagyanagar? he said during the campaign.
The name comes from a small temple of the goddess Lakshmi, known as the Bhagyalakshmi temple, adjacent to Charminar. Some BJP leaders have claimed that the temple got its name from Bhagyanagar, which was the original name for Hyderabad before Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah changed it to Hyderabad. The temple falls in the part of the city that is an AIMIM fortress.
The temple was at the center of this year’s civic elections from the beginning. During the start of the election campaign, the State Election Commission ordered the government to stop receiving applications from people affected by the rain for relief of Rs 10,000, for which TRS blamed the BJP. The BJP head of state B Sanjay Kumar challenged the Chief Minister to come to the Bhagyalakshmi temple, saying that he was ready to take an oath on behalf of the goddess in the presence of the CM, and went to the temple. The Union Interior Minister Amit Shah also visited the temple when he was in Hyderabad to campaign.
