The Bengal police order to play a coronavirus awareness song written and edited by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the 159th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore has sparked controversy. Opposition parties have called it an attempt to “impose the prime minister” on Bengal’s largest annual cultural event.

On Friday, almost all police stations in the state produced small pictures with a cutout of Asia’s first Nobel Prize winner, Tagore, and played their songs through loudspeakers. The Nobel Prize for Literature had also composed a work consisting of more than 2,000 songs, collectively called Rabindra Sangeet, considered one of the most important genres of music in Bengal.

They also played the coronavirus awareness song, “Corona-ke Chhutey Diyo Na,” written by CM Banerjee in late March and performed by singer-turned-minister Indranil Sen.

The order of the Additional Director General of West Bengal Police (law and order) is dated May 6 and was sent to the Special Superintendent of Police of all districts and commissions.

The order says: “A program entitled Kabi Pranam must be observed in the districts and commissions on 05/08/2020 to commemorate the birthday of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. A collection of selected Tagore songs is attached, along with the awareness song, written by Hon’ble CM, WB, about coronavirus. This should be played in major residential areas and housing complexes of cities and towns between 9 am and 11.30 am “.

The order added that police personnel who are “endowed with an interest in music and singing should be encouraged and mobilized to participate, wearing safety clothing and maintaining social distance.”

“We used the celebration of Tagore’s birth anniversary to publicize the coronavirus. In addition to playing Tagore’s songs, microphones were also used to remind people of what should and should not be done. Coronavirus was played as part of the awareness program, ”said the district superintendent of police, who declined to be identified, on Friday.

From the price of her paintings to the poetry written by her and gifted by the school education department to deserving students as “rewards,” CM Banerjee’s artistic expressions have often created controversy. The coronavirus song is no exception. The top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) excavated the Mamata Banerjee administration for issuing the order.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is the best icon, whose teachings and wisdom guide the world. But what have Mamata Banerjee’s songs of conscience to do with celebrating Gurudev’s life and legacy? It is not only an affront to Gurdev, but also mocks the fight against Corona! BJP national executive member Mukul Roy said.

“Instead of commemorating Gurudev, the WB government is imposing the CM on people! This is totally insulting! Alleged Head of the Bengal BJP Women’s Wing and Member of Parliament for Hooghly Lok Sabha, Locket Chatterjee.

In Kolkata, CM Banerjee paid tribute to 19th-century polymath at a small event on the streets outside Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata’s key cultural complex, where he joined Indranil Sen and lent his voice to a Tagore song by standing in front of a cut. Out of the bard. The government, which organized mega cultural celebrations across the state on this day, has created a 2-hour program that will air on various television channels on Friday.
