West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar visited Twitter on Thursday to fire another salvo at the Mamata Banerjee government over the “red carpet” treatment for a World Health Organization (WHO) team and ask the government about the result of the visit.

Her tweet came amid visits by a central inter-ministerial team to Bengal that initially sparked a controversy with the state government criticizing the Center’s decision to send these teams as “unilateral” and “undesirable.”

However, the state administration has begun to cooperate with the core team after a letter vigorously drafted by the Union Home Office warning the government that obstructing the core team amounted to a violation of the Disaster Management Act and the Supreme Court orders.
A team of WHO representatives visited the East Midnapore districts, a Covid-19 access point in the “red zone”, and Bankura in the “orange zone” on Monday. The state administration had fully cooperated with the WHO team during their one-day visit.
Incidentally, the president of the Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dilip Ghosh, had also criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for preferring “foreign advice” over those coming from the Center.
“She formed a global advisory committee that includes foreign citizens. It would be acceptable if the Prime Minister formed a global advisory panel. But why would a state government prefer advice and praise from outside rather than cooperate with the Center? Governor Dhankhar has been taking photos of the Bengal government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. The tough Trinamool Congress has largely refrained from responding to the governor, saying they’d better “ignore it.” The party’s Rajya Sabha national leader and spokesperson, Derek O-Brien, recently described Dhankhar without naming him as “a Twitter nominee for New Delhi.”

Dhankhar’s repeated punches in the state government also won him criticism from the national speaker of Congress and Bengal deputy Rajya Sabha, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who recently attacked the governor in a series of tweets.
