Mumbai:
A Shiv Sena leader and five others, who were arrested in connection with the attack on a retired naval officer in Mumbai, were released on bail. The retired officer was beaten on Friday allegedly by workers of Maharashtra’s ruler Shiv Sena for sending a cartoon mocking Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
The six defendants, including Kamlesh Kadam, a local Seine leader, were arrested by Mumbai police overnight after a case was recorded. According to the police, the Supreme Court order empowering the police station to release on bail a defendant from the police station itself in matters where the maximum sentence is seven years or less was exercised by granting him bail.
Madan Sharma, 65, was attacked near his home in Kandivalli East of Mumbai. Images posted online showed him with wounds to his face and a bloodshot eye.
Sharma, in his complaint, said that he had sent the cartoon to the WhatsApp group of his residential society. She later received a call from Kamlesh Kadam, who asked for her name and address. In the afternoon, they called him outside the building and he was attacked by a group of men.
Security footage that is widely shared shows the former officer being beaten by men, mostly wearing masks.
He is seen walking towards the front door of his apartment building and after a few moments, running back inside with a group of men chasing him. They drag him by his shirt and he is seen hitting him.
“Eight to ten people attacked and beat me today (Friday) after receiving threatening calls for a message I had sent. I have worked for the nation all my life. A government like this should not exist,” Madan Sharma told the news. ANI agency on Friday.
Dr. Sheela Sharma, daughter of the former officer, told NDTV: “We do not know how the photo got to Shiv Sena. We want strict action. The defendant should not have obtained bail in this way. Police personnel had He came to our house and talked about an investigation on us. I object to this bail. “
Several BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, posted a photo of an injured Madan Sharma.
“Extremely sad and shocking incident. Retired naval officer was beaten by thugs just for a WhatsApp forwarding. Please stop this GundaRaj Uddhav Thackeray ji. We demand strong action and punishment for these thugs (sic),” Fadnavis tweeted.
Pravin Darekar of the BJP, leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, met Sharma at the hospital today. “This is another side of Shiv Sena. They (defendants) got bail because of Shiv Sena,” he told NDTV.
