Chandigarh:

Champion fighter and BJP leader Babita Phogat, who unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, has resigned as deputy director of the state sports department, sparking speculation that she will contest the vote for a seat in the Assembly in the Sonipat district next month.

That rumor grew louder tonight after Phogat met with Chief Minister Manonhar Lal Khattar.

In a short letter to the head secretary of the sports department, Ms Phogat had said that she was resigning due to “unavoidable circumstances”.

“I had recently joined as an assistant principal in the athletic department, but due to unavoidable circumstances, I may not be able to continue my services,” she wrote.

Voting for Baroda’s seat in Haryana’s Sonipat is scheduled for November 3. Individually, the seat makes little difference to the BJP: the party has 40 seats in the 90-member Assembly.

Yet failing to win a seat in a Jat-dominated constituency is unlikely to appeal to the party, particularly as protests against farm laws sweep across the state.

Sri Krishnan Hooda of Congress has held the seat since 2009.

Phogat, 30, joined the BJP in August last year along with his father Mahavir Phogat, just before the Haryana elections. Three-time Commonwealth gold and silver medalists, the two inspired the 2016 Bollywood blockbuster “Dangal,” starring Aamir Khan, which chronicles the journey of Babita and her older sister through the world of dominated wrestling. by men.

She had been very supportive of central government policies, including the decision to remove Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, before joining the BJP.

“I am a huge fan of Narendra Modi. I have been his fan since 2014. He has worked a lot for the country. I think everyone would like to join BJP,” she said after joining the party.

Earlier this year, he sparked a controversy after linking the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected more than 67 lakh in India and killed more than 1.04 people, to an Islamic sect. His post on social media divided social media users, with #SuspendBabitaPhogat taking on #ISupportBabitaPhogat.
