NEW DELHI: In a move that is destined to trigger acute reactions from modern medical professionals, Ayurveda postgraduate holders are now able to perform a variety of procedures including general surgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and dental procedures and surgeries.
The Central Council of Medicine of India (CCIM) in their newsletter allowed Ayurvedic PG fainting spells to receive formal training for such procedures. The development indicates the growing emphasis on traditional medicine under the government of Narendra Modi.
Training modules for surgical procedures will be added to the Ayurvedic studies curriculum, according to a new bulletin notification. The development came after the CCIM amended the Central Council of Medicine of India (PG Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016, to include regulation to allow PG Ayurveda students to practice general surgery.
“The CCIM, with the prior sanction of the Central Government, hereby establishes the following regulations to amend the Central Council of Indian Medicine (Postgraduate Education in Ayurveda) Regulations 2016,” the bulletin notice said.
The Act was renamed the Central Council of Indian Medicine (Postgraduate Education in Ayurveda) Amendment Regulations, 2020. He added that students will be trained in two streams of surgery and will receive degrees of MS (Ayurveda), shalya tantra general surgery and MS (Ayurveda) shalakya tantra (disease of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head and dentistry).
