Filing income tax returns AY 2020-21 Latest updates: With just two days to go, more than 12 lakh of income tax returns (ITR) were filed as of 6pm today (29th December 2020), according to the income tax department. More than 1.5 lakh ITR was filed in just one hour between 5 and 6pm today. The Income Tax Department said in a previous tweet that 7,65,836 ITRs were filed until 4:00 p.m. today and 1,35,408 ITR in the last hour.

The Income Tax Department said that as of Dec. 28, about 4.37 crore of income tax returns were filed for the 2019-20 fiscal year (2020-21 fiscal year). During the same period last year, ITRs of 4.51 crore were filed. The deadline for filing personal income tax returns will end on Thursday (December 31, 2020). The tax department has asked taxpayers not to wait and file their returns early. The due date for taxpayers whose accounts require auditing is January 31, 2021.

• Advice from the Income Tax department for electronic verification: “We have come to know that users are experiencing some difficulties in receiving the Aadhaar-based OTP for the purpose of electronic verification of submitted ITRs. This issue has been discussed with the authorities concerned. However, it is reiterated that while the ITR filing must be done within the stipulated period, the electronic verification of the filed ITR can / can be done with Aadhaar OTP or other options within 120 days after the ITR filing date. “The IT department said in a series of tweets.
• Demand for extension of expiration date: Even though a large number of taxpayers are filing their returns before the end of the due date, several of them are also seeking an extension of the due date. These include professionals and others whose livelihoods were affected by the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several of them are running a campaign on social media for an immediate extension of the expiration date.
