The trio of Josh hazlewood, Pat cummins and Mitchell starc produced a sensational performance as the visitors collapsed to their lowest score in the test of 36. India’s previous lowest score was 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974 and Gavaskar was part of that team.
“I mean, whatever team is bumping for its lowest test score from the moment it started playing test cricket, that’s never a good thing to see,” Gavaskar told ‘Channel 7’ after the loss of eight wicket from India here.
“But having said that, if any other team had faced that kind of bowling, they would have come out too, maybe they wouldn’t have been up to it for 36, maybe 72 or 80-90, but the way Hazelwood, Cummins played and the previous three on Starc spell, they asked a lot of questions, “he explained.
“So it’s not fair to blame the Indian batsmen for the way they came out because Australian bowling just played excellent,” he added.
After finishing the second day with a practical 62-run lead in the first inning, India faced a batting collapse in the first session of the third day.
Neither of their hitters reached double-digit scores when Hazlewood (5/8) and Cummins (4/21) terrorized tourists into submission.
Australia now leads the four-game series 1-0.
The two teams will meet again on December 26 for the Boxing Day event in Melbourne, where the visitors will be left without skipper services. virat Kohli, who will return home for the birth of their first child.
