David Warner gave Australia cause for concern when he limped out of the SCG with a groin injury during the second ODI. He was injured diving into a save early in the India chase.
In the fourth over, Shikhar Dhawan hit the ball towards the center, where Warner crossed and produced a nosedive to intercept the ball. Apparently the injury occurred when he rolled for the second time.
It took him a couple of minutes to get to his feet and then the Australian physiotherapist helped him off the field.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson confirmed the injury and that Warner would come in for the scans on Sunday night.
The final ODI of this series is in Canberra on Wednesday, followed by three T20Is in quick succession, but the main concern for Australia would be an impact on Warner’s availability for the test series that begins in Adelaide on December 17.
In the short term, if Australia needed a replacement starter for the final ODI and the T20I they would probably opt for Matthew Wade.
Earlier in the day, Warner had 83 on Australia’s whopping 4-for-389 total. It is the second injury Australia has suffered in this series after Marcus Stoinis’ lateral strain that saw him ruled out of the second game.
Australia A’s match against India at Drummoyne Oval, which begins December 6, has been announced as a possible test between Joe Burns and Will Pucovski to team up with Warner at the top of the Test order.
However, so far there has been a lot of backing for starter Burns even though Pucovski has scored a double hundred in a row this season.
