AUS vs IND: Virender Sehwag controls India’s dismal hitting performance on Day 3

The Indian team, which posted its lowest total in an inning in test cricket, sent shockwaves into the cricket-mad country. Former India starter Virender Sehwag, who was known for his explosive hitting, took to Twitter to monitor India’s lousy hitting performance. None of India’s hitters were able to reach double figures and Sehwag posted the team’s worst hitting performance comparing it to an OTP no one would like to remember. “The OTP to forget this is 49204084041,” Sehwag wrote on the microblogging site Twitter.

After taking a solid 53-run lead in the first innings, the visitors were in a dominant position, but an energetic performance by the Australian fast bowling duo of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins mocked the widely acclaimed batting lineup of India.

India, who was ahead by 62 runs after the second day’s play, was only able to add 27 runs to their nightly score.

To make matters worse, Mohammed Shami, India’s leader of fast bowling, was retired after a Pat Cummins goalkeeper left him in a bind when India’s inning ended at 36/9. Australia hit an easy 90-run goal to win the game that would give them a four-game series lead.

Promoted

The only respite for the Indian team was that they somehow managed to surpass the lowest total of any team in the longest format. However, they were six short of their previous lowest total of 42 runs, scored against England in 1974 at Lord’s.

Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin failed to upset the scorers, and went for a duck. While Cummins and Hazlewood deserve the praise, the inability of the Indian players to deal with stitching and swing was equally responsible for the collapse.
