Virat Kohli became the fastest to reach 12,000 runs in international one-day cricket on Wednesday. Kohli broke the mark in the third ODI against Australia in Canberra. The 32-year-old had 11,977 runs prior to this game and hit the benchmark shortly after hitting the fold after winning the toss and hitting first. Kohli reached the milestone in his 242nd inning, thus improving the previous record set by Sachin Tendulkar, who posted his 12,000th career in his 300th inning.

Kohli is India’s second highest scorer in ODIs behind Tendulkar’s 18,426 of 463 ODIs. The India captain also holds the record for the fastest hitter (in terms of innings) with 10,000 and 11,000 runs in ODIs.

Kohli reached 11,000 runs in 222 innings and became the fastest to break the 10,000-run mark by doing so in his 205th inning.

The current captain of India made his ODI debut in 2008 against Sri Lanka and has reached 43 ODI centuries in addition to 59 out of 50 in a career spanning more than 12 years.

The most recent of his half century came in the second ODI against Australia in Sydney, where he hit 89 in the 390-run chase from India.

Despite Kohli’s hit and an act of support from KL Rahul (76), India fell 51 runs short of the target and blew the series 2-0 after losing another high-scoring adventure, the first ODI, by 66 races.

Kohli’s presence on the India tour of Australia is limited by her paternity leave from BCCI. The first-rate hitter will go to India after the first test in Adelaide to be with his wife, who is expecting a first child.
