Ravichandran Ashwin of India became the pitcher to fire the most left-handers in test cricket on Tuesday when he pitched Josh Hazlewood in Australia’s second inning in Test 2 at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Ashwin has now laid off 192 lefties, one more than the previous best of 191 by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan. Ashwin has 375 proving grounds under his belt with an average of 25.22 out of 73 tests. He picked up two wickets in Australia’s second inning and three in the first in the ongoing Melbourne test.

Other bowlers on the list for the most layoffs of left-handed hitters are James Anderson (186), Glenn McGrath (172), Shane Warne (172) and Anil Kumble (167).

Ashwin is the third highest wicket bearer for India among spinners in Tests, and is behind Harbhajan Singh (417) and Anil Kumble (619).

Among all Indian bowlers, Ashwin ranks fourth after Kumble, Kapil Dev (434) and Harbhajan.

The 34-year-old made his international debut in a one-day international against Sri Lanka in 2010 and made his test debut in 2011 against the West Indies.

Ashwin has chosen 254 home testing grounds at 22.80 out of 43 tests and 121 away fields at 30:30 out of 30 tests.

India is aiming to level the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar series in Melbourne after losing the first round in Adelaide by eight wickets.

At the Adelaide day-night event, India was limited to 36 of 9, its lowest score on the event, having led Australia in the first innings.

The other two rounds of the four-game series are scheduled to take place in Sydney and Brisbane.
