Prithvi Shaw posted a cryptic message on his Instagram stories even as he faced criticism for poor bat performance in India’s first test against Australia in Adelaide. Shaw returned scores of 0 and 4 in India’s eight-wicket loss, which also featured the team’s lowest test score, and left a nanny to Marnus Labuschagne in Australia’s early innings. “If sometimes people demotivate you for something you try to do, that means you can do it, but they can’t,” reads the message Shaw posted on social media.
Shaw faced the ire of cricket fans when India capitulated to 36/9 in Adelaide and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the four-game match.
His technique was also criticized by experts, to the extent that former Australia captain Ricky Ponting predicted Shaw’s firing on the air moments before Mitchell Starc threw India’s opener through the gate for a duck in the first entry.
In the second trial, too, Pat Cummins dropped Shaw with a delivery that slipped into the space between the bat and the pad.
The 21-year-old right-hander from Mumbai also didn’t get a big hit in preparation matches.
He returned 0, 19, 40 and 3 in the two warm-up games, the second of which was a day-night contest as a precursor to the Day-Night Test in Adelaide.

Despite his poor form, Shaw was preferred over fellow starting hitter Shubman Gill, who scored half a century in the second warm-up game.
However, Gill is likely to replace Shaw in the second test starting December 26 in Melbourne, even as India seeks to fill in the gaps left by patron Virat Kohli, who returned home on paternity leave, and Mohammed Shami, who allegedly suffered a broken wrist is unlikely to participate more in the series.
