AUS vs IND: Gautam Gambhir, fans beat Virat Kohli’s captaincy after India’s defeat in second ODI

Australia clinched the three-game One-day International (ODI) series against India with a game to spare after winning by 51 runs in the second ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday. Australia had dominated the visitors in the opening ODI and did so again on Sunday to wrap up the series without much fuss. Indian bowling in both games so far has come under fire, with Australia scoring more than 370 runs both times. Virat Kohli’s captaincy has also come under scrutiny, with former India starter Gautam Gambhir questioning some of the bowling changes made by the Indian skipper. Fans were also unimpressed and took to Twitter and expressed frustration at India’s “weird” tactics with Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri.

“I can’t understand the captaincy to be honest. We kept talking about how important it was to take the wickets up front, if you have to stop this kind of batting lineup and then do your best two-overs bowling,” Gautam Gambhir said in a video posted on ESPNCricinfo.

“Normally, in a one-day game, there are probably three spells and you finish 10 overs – 4.3.3 – or probably the maximum is four overs. But if you stop your main fast caster by simply casting two overs Head-on with the new ball, I can’t understand that type of captaincy and I can’t even explain that captaincy, “he added.

“It’s not T20 cricket. T20 cricket is different and sometimes even in T20 cricket, people end up throwing three overs up front. I can’t understand the reason to be honest, that was a bad captaincy,” Gambhir said.

Some angry fans criticized the events in Indian cricket, training their weapons on the Kohli-Shastri combination. Many others tweeted that Rohit Sharma should become the captain of the Indian team.

The India tour in Australia has gotten off to a nightmare start, with visitors completely outclassed in both ODIs so far. Australia’s batting has marked their authority, and Indian bowlers seem lacking in ideas most of the time.
