Australia vs India: Sachin Tendulkar asked the ICC to investigate the DRS regarding the referee’s decision.© Sachin Tendulkar / Instagram
Sachin Tendulkar expressed his displeasure at the ‘Referee’s Call’ in the Decision Review System (DRS) after Australian batsmen Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne were ruled out in the review after the ball tracking returned the ‘Call referee ‘on day 3 of the second test between India and Australia in Melbourne. Jasprit Bumrah hit Burns on the pads and India appealed. The outfield referee dismissed it as not ruled out and after some deliberation India captain Ajinkya Rahane went to check. However, DRS returned the “referee’s call” meant that the on-field decision was not upheld. If the court referee had given it and Australia had reviewed it, the decision would have stood.
The reason players opt for a review is because they are not happy with the decision made by the court referee.
The DRS system should be thoroughly examined by the @ICC, especially for the ‘Referee Call’.#AUSvIND– Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) December 28, 2020
Tendulkar wrote on Twitter: “The reason players opt for a review is because they are not happy with the decision made by the outfield referee. The DRS system needs to be thoroughly examined by the @ICC, especially for the ‘ Referees’ call. ”
Burns, who was hitting in one run, survived that time, but was unable to seize the opportunity when he overcame a delivery by Umesh Yadav behind goalkeeper Rishabh Pant to be eliminated by four runs.
Labuschagne also benefited from the ‘Umpire’s Call’ when he hit 24 when a delivery from Mohammed Siraj hit the batter on the pads, but the on-field decision was not up for review.
The Australian No. 3 also failed to take advantage of the reprieve as R Ashwin did so with a straight ball that grabbed the outside edge of Labuschagne and landed in Rahane’s hands as he slid.
Labuschagne did 28.
