With a 0-1 lead in the four-game series, India finished the second day at 277-for-five for a practical 82-run lead after leaving Australia for 195 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In stumps, which was brought in early due to rain, Rahane was going strong at 104 and providing company for Ravindra Jadeja at 40, the two adding what could prove to be a game-changing 104-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
This was Rahane’s 12th event and second at the iconic venue, after a 147 fine during the 2014 tour. A day after receiving high praise for his tactical acumen while organizing bowlers, Rahane shone with the bat and was correct with his reading of the situations of the matches during his stay in the middle.
Rahane got a life when Steve Smith knocked him down at 73 on the second slip in Australia’s first over with the second new ball, the unfortunate pitcher was Mitchell Starc, who was pulled from the attack after just two overs with the bright cherry red. That particular phase was crucial both from a team point of view and by not losing a wicket with the second new ball, India made sure to finish the day before Australia, both in terms of racing and psychologically.
