Jio Women’s T20 Challenge 2020: What is the format?
One week, three teams, four games. The three teams, IPL Supernovas, IPL Velocity and IPL Trailblazers, will meet once in the group stage and the top two will advance to the final. If teams have the same number of points, the net race rate will determine who progresses.
Supernovae face Velocity in the tournament opener (Wednesday), before Velocity’s Trailblazers tackles (Thursday) and Trailblazers take on Supernovae (Saturday). The first two will face off for the title (Monday, November 9), which was won by Supernovas in 2018 and 2019 after last-ball finishes.
How many foreign players are participating this year?
A total of 12 foreign players from England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Bangladesh, New Zealand and Thailand are playing this season.
The supernovae have Ayabonga Khaka of South Africa, the captain of the Sri Lankan women’s team Chamari Atapattu and her compatriot Shashikala Siriwardene, and Shakera Selman of the West Indies. Khaka is one of the first two South African players, along with Suné Luus, in the Women’s T20 Challenge. The 28-year-old median pacemaker is a 60 ODI and 29 T20I veteran, with 72 and 28 scalps respectively.
The pioneers have the number one bowler in women’s T20 cricket, England’s Sophie Ecclestone. They have explosive Caribbean hitter Deandra Dottin and Bangladeshi spinner Salma Khatun, along with Thai Natthakan Chantham.
Velocity features England’s Danielle Wyatt, South African all-rounder Suné Luus, New Zealand’s Leigh Kasperek and Bangladeshi closer Jahanara Alam.
