Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted on Saturday the importance of improving indigenization in the national security system, not only in the supply of equipment and weapons, but also in the doctrines, procedures and customs that are practiced in the armed forces.
The prime minister also expressed appreciation for the dedication shown by the Indian armed forces over the past year during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the difficult situation on the northern border, his office said in a statement. He was addressing the Combined Commanders Conference at Kevadia in Gujarat.
“All Indians are very proud of our armed forces. His courage is remarkable. He urged the Armed Forces to think of various reforms that would further strengthen the forces. Ways to integrate brave veterans into celebrations to mark 75 years of Independence were also discussed, ”Prime Minister Modi later tweeted.
Highlighting the rapidly changing technological landscape, the Prime Minister stressed the need to turn the Indian Army into a “future force”. He also stressed the need to optimize manpower planning in the military and civilian parts of the national security architecture, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Modi called for a holistic approach, focused on breaking down civil-military silos and accelerating the speed of decision-making, as he advised forces to shed legacy systems and practices that have outlived their usefulness and relevance.
The Prime Minister also noted that the country will celebrate 75 years of its Independence next year, and urged the Armed Forces to seize the occasion to undertake activities and initiatives that inspire the country’s youth.
The conference in Kevadia comes at a crucial time when Indian and Chinese troops were negotiating disengagement in the eastern sector of Ladakh. It also comes days after the announcement by the Indian and Pakistani armies that they have begun observing a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) starting at midnight on February 24.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Defense Chief of Staff General Bipin Rawat, the three service chiefs, officers with the rank of Secretary of the Ministry of Defense and top military officers attended the event.
