RAIPUR: At least five members of the security personnel died and several were injured in a meeting with Maoists in the restless Bijapur district of the Bastar division on Saturday.
According to a senior police officer, the number of victims may rise as the encounter was still ongoing in the forests of the Tarren region on the Sukma and Bijapur borders.
“A joint team of 400 special forces, district reserve guards and CRPF The personnel launched an anti-Naxalite operation when they were ambushed by Maoists in deep forests. We received information that a large number of Maoists were having a meeting in the forests with senior leaders and based on the inputs received, an operation was planned, “the officials said.
Bastar Range Police Inspector General P Sundarraj said detailed information will be received once security personnel are contacted. The rescue operation is underway at the scene, he said.
The incident comes ten days after the death of five DRG staff members in a Maoist attack when they set off an explosion with an improvised explosive device that blew up the bus carrying jaws in Narayanpur district.
