At 25,833, Maharashtra Reports Largest Daily Increase in Covid Cases

Maharashtra has recorded 25,833 new cases of Covid in the last 24 hours, the highest since the outbreak of the pandemic last year, becoming the epicenter of the second peak of the virus. In the same period, there have been 58 deaths, marking a sharp increase in both the number of cases and deaths.

Yesterday, the state registered 23,179 new cases of coronavirus, almost 30 percent more than the previous day. As of March 1, the positivity rate was around 11 percent for Maharashtra, which grew to more than 16 percent. Over the past 24 hours, the figure has dropped marginally to 13.35 percent.

The fatality figures also reflect a similar trend, currently standing at 2.2%.

While the Uddhav Thackeray government does not provide breakout data or details on the locations of the access points, several strains of mutated viruses are suspected to be operating there, which explains such a steep rise in numbers.

In general, there has been a big jump in cases of mutant strains since their presence was detected in India. 158 new cases have been reported in the last 14 days. On March 18, India recorded 400 cases of variants of the disease in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil.

The Maharashtra government has banned all social, cultural, political and religious gatherings in the state to curb the further spread of Covid-19.

Maharashtra’s Palghar ordered the indefinite closure of all schools and universities in the Vasai-Virar civic jurisdiction starting Thursday. Government and private shelters in the district will be closed from March 23 until further orders.

Yesterday, the Union Health Ministry said that 60 percent of the country’s active Covid cases and 45.4 percent of deaths are concentrated in Maharashtra.

Calling for decisive action, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a virtual meeting with senior ministers, said: “We need to stop the second emerging crown peak soon,” and asked them to increase testing and ensure the use of masks.

Rs 3.89 crore vaccinations have been made in India at 7pm today, provisional figures show.

Today, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government can vaccinate the city in 3 months “if the Center gives its go-ahead.” After Mumbai, Delhi is the city that recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases.
