Arya Rajendran, 21, is likely to become the next mayor of Thiruvananthapuram after proving victory in recent civic polls in Kerala.
The ruling CPI (M) Thiruvananthapuram district secretariat recommended Arya’s name for the position of mayor, which must be ratified by the party’s state secretary.
While responding to the endless messages of congratulations from her modest rented house in Mudavanmukal here, Arya said that she had not yet received official confirmation from her group on the new responsibility. The secretary of state will make announcements on five of the six corporations in total by Saturday.
If all goes as expected, Arya, now a graduating sophomore from a city university, would not only become the new mayor of Kerala’s capital, a position that has been held by several important personalities in the past, but also in the youngest mayor in history. country.
Arya had entered the prestigious council hall of the capital’s Municipal Corporation building six days ago to take the oath as a councilor for the ruling Marxist party. He had won the Mudavanmughal neighborhood of the city corporation, with 2,872 votes, 549 more than the rival candidate for Congress.
A staunch party activist from a staunch Marxist family said: “I have faced the elections with confidence and courage. I am ready to take on whatever responsibility my party has entrusted to me. My dream is to advance politics and my studies together.”
Daughter of CPI activist (M) K Rajendran, an electrician by profession, and Sreelatha, an LIC agent, Arya is a second-year undergraduate math student at All Saints College.
A member of the state committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI), she is also the state president of Balasangam, the children’s wing of the left-wing party, which she had joined at the tender age of six.
As mayor, her top priority would be waste management in the capital city, which has also been a challenging task for her predecessors.
“Our city is beautiful. To keep it that way, it should be free of debris. In addition to a scientific waste management system, a deep awareness is needed among people not to dump debris on the roadsides,” Arya said.
As a councilor, she wanted a family health center in her neighborhood and to implement programs to reduce stress among children.
Saying that her university professors and friends were very supportive of her in her political period, Arya said she also wanted to find time to prepare for the three semester exams she had missed due to the election campaign.
The mayor-designate, a fervent fan of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in politics and superstar Mohanlal in film, also said she wanted to continue her studies as much as she could and intervene in people’s problems and find a solution for that.
“I am a person who grew up listening to my father say that it is not individual, but the party that is supreme. I will continue as an obedient party partner,” he added.
Actor Mohanlal, whose manor house is in Mudavanmugal, called and congratulated Arya, which was broadcast on the party’s news channel ‘People’ on Saturday.
An excited Arya thanked him for his wishes and hoped that he lived up to everyone’s expectations.
