A 27-year-old assistant at a Covid-19 quarantine center in Maharashtra’s Thane district was arrested for allegedly raping a woman at the facility, police said Sunday. The incident took place in June, but came to light on Saturday when the 20-year-old woman filed a police report, Inspector Sampat Patil from the Navghar police station said.

The woman in her complaint alleged that the defendant committed the crime while caring for an 11-year-old relative who was housed in the quarantine center, located in the Mira Road area here, the official said. According to the police, the woman was staying in a room at the facility along with her 10-month-old daughter to care for the relative who tested positive for coronavirus.

The accused used to visit the room at night under the pretext of giving hot water. He allegedly made advances toward the woman, but she resisted his move, after which he threatened to kill her son, Patil said. He allegedly raped the woman in the room three times during the first week of June, the official said.

The woman did not approach the police at the time because she feared that the defendant would harm his relatives. She filed a police report on Saturday after which the defendant was arrested and a case was registered against her under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (rape) and other relevant provisions, the official said.
