Assam Woman, 100, beats Covid, praises Himanta Sarma for Covid fight

Mai Handique was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago after testing positive for COVID.

Her age may have presented a challenge, but the 100-year-old Mai Handique’s battle against COVID-19 was won by her positivity, doctors said Thursday.

Handique, Assam’s oldest COVID-19 patient, was discharged from the Mahendra Mohan Chowdhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati on Wednesday, they said.

A resident of the Home of Mothers for the Elderly, she was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago after testing positive for COVID.

The doctors and nurses who treated her held a small celebration before she was discharged. Handique, who was beaming with excitement, joined the party singing various Assamese songs at the top of her lungs.

Handique, called Aita (grandmother) by everyone at the hospital, told reporters that she enjoyed her stay and the food.

“They gave us fish or meat most days, while eggs and bananas were given daily. They also gave us ” roti-bhaji ” (chappatis and vegetables), which I enjoyed the most,” he said.

She also thanked everyone who cared for her saying, “The girls (the nurses) and the doctors” took very good care of her. “

Handique also specially praised the Minister of Health, Himanta Biswa Sarma: “He is working hard for all of us and I bless him to continue helping people suffering from this disease.”

Mr. Sarma also wished her recovery.

“The fierce determination of Mai Handique, 100, is monumental. With the brilliant support of the MMCH doctors, she defeated the coronavirus, teaching us a lesson in how to have the right willpower,” he said.

A doctor treating Handique said: “At first, we were concerned about her age and she also has hypertension, but she was always cheerful and in a positive mood.”

Twelve residents of the Home for the Aged for Mothers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and five of them have been discharged so far.
