An Assam Rifles patrol team was attacked today by suspected militants in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, the sources said, adding that a jawan was killed in the line of duty.
The incident took place in Sanliam Tri-Junction on the district’s Khonsa Lazu Highway, which shares a border with Myanmar. Massive search operations are underway in the area, the sources said.
The security forces in northeast India are under attack once again after a brief period of calm.
Arunachal Pradesh’s three districts: Tirap, Longding and Changlang, which share porous borders with Myanmar, have long been under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or AFSPA, which gives broad powers to the security forces, including the from shoot to kill.
These areas have not only been transit routes but also sectors of operation for various banned militant groups from Assam and Nagaland. All banned militant groups still have hideouts in Myanmar and use the borders to sneak in and carry out attacks on security forces.
Earlier this month, Assam Rifles troops were attacked in the Changlang district. The incident took place in Tengmo village, under the Changlang District Jairampur Police Station, about 300 km from the capital Itanagar.
The militants ambushed and when they saw a tanker truck of Assam rifles approaching within range, they fired grenades and sprayed it with bullets from automatic weapons. One Jawan from Assam Rifles died from his injuries, while another was wounded, intelligence sources added.
On July 11, security forces shot dead at least six insurgents suspected of being members of the clandestine naga group NSCN (IM) in the Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Last year, in a gruesome ambush, the then Khonsa MLA in Arunachal Pradesh Triong Aboh and 10 other people were killed.
