GUWAHATI: The Assam government it will soon give financial incentives to school and university students to attend its classes regularly. Announcing this in Sivasagar on Sunday, the state education minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said that female students will receive 100 rupees for each day they attend school.
He added that the government would deposit Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000, respectively, for undergraduate and graduate students, into their bank accounts at the end of January so that they can use the money to buy books. The move is seen as an attempt to win over the student community before the next assembly elections.
“We had planned this last year, but were unable to implement it due to the spread of Covid-19. We wanted to pay money to attend classes in both schools and universities, ”Himanta said while speaking at a government function in Sivasagar where motorcycles were given to girls who passed last year’s Class XII state board exam in the first division.
Students were on their way to Jaypee Aman, Sector 151, when their car crashed into the pillar in front of a petrol pump in Tugalpur in the Knowledge Park area.
15,000 more girls will receive scooters in February: Sarma
In total, 948 girl students received scooters in Sivasagar.
Himanta said the government will continue to give two-wheelers to female students even if one of them passes the Class XII board exam in the first division.
He said the government would spend Rs 144.30 crore to buy motorcycles for 22,245 girls who passed the 2020 Class XII board exam in the first division.
He said that next month the government would deliver scooters to 5,000 girls who passed Class XII in the first division in 2018 and 10,000 girls who achieved the feat in 2019.
“We want boys and girls to enjoy the same kind of attention. Many parents marry off their daughters early, thinking that their sons would take care of them. This mentality must change, ”Himanta added.
