With 147 new patients detected on Monday, the highest peak of a day for the state, the number of Covid-19-positive patients in Assam crossed the 500 figure mark.

The day started with 35 new cases from the seven districts in the state, including the first patient of Dhemaji, the only district 33 in Assam, which had not recorded any Covid-19 positive cases, until the Sunday.

Soon, 39 patients were confirmed to be from the three districts of the state of the account to 467 cases. On Monday afternoon, in the evening, 73 patients were reported, taking the total of 540 cases.

Five patients, who had tested negative in subsequent tests, were discharged during the day in Guwahati and Jorhat. Currently, the state has 470 active cases, 63 recoveries, 4 deaths and 3 positive cases of people who migrate to other states.

Assam recorded its first positive case on March 31, when a 52-year-old cancer patient was found to be infected with the coronavirus. It took another 37 days for the figure to reach 50, 7 May, and just 10 days to double and reach the 100 figure mark the 17th of May.

The figure doubled again to reach the 200 cases, four days later, on May 21 and crossed the 400 cases in the other four days Monday. The latest wave in the positive cases that has happened in the past 7 to 10 days since the ban on inter-state movement was lifted on May 4.

Of the total cases, almost 400 are among the people who have visited the state of roads and railways in the last three weeks. Until Sunday afternoon, about 60,000 people had come into Assam from other states in the region and across the country.

“The increase that has happened in the last 7 days, and therefore our recovery rate has been reduced to 16% in comparison with the national figure of 41%,” the minister of health Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.

“A positive aspect is that almost 90% of our total cases are of people who are in quarantine. We have adopted a policy of brutal quarantine of 14 days for all returns and has helped to prevent the outbreak of the disease,” said Sarma.

Surveillance in the community of the campaign by the government of the state covered 25,000 villages in the state and recorded about 23,000 cases of people with fever. The tests performed on a section of them that showed Covid-19-like symptoms, have been negative for all.

Sarma mentioned that a pro-active approach adopted in the past two months has helped to Assam to put the proper infrastructure in place and currently the state has the capacity to treat nearly 5,000 Covid-19 patients.

More probable cases, with the resumption of domestic flights

With the resumption of domestic flights on Monday, Assam now faces an additional burden to quarantine facilities and the number of Covid-19 positive cases could also wave.

A total of 32 flights was expected to reach Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on Monday, but due to cancellations, only eight arrived. A total of 686 passengers landed on the first day.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the high airports Authority of India officials, security personnel and state government officials were present at the airport to ensure that the standard operating procedures (Sop), prepared by the government of Assam, which were followed.

He added that the state government hoped that the rush of returnees to end by the end of June so that they can be managed properly prior to the onset of the floods of July.
