“They (the BJP) did not keep any of their promises (to the people of Assam). They said (before the 2016 elections) that they would control the price increase … but they did not. They promised to control the floods … but they didn’t. They promised to open industries … but they didn’t. They haven’t done anything … they have nothing to talk about … so for every question, the answer is ‘Badruddin Ajmal,’ “he added.
Ajmal dismissed the BJP leaders and their campaign strategy as insipid and lacking in substance, saying it only revealed that they were unable to lead the government.
“Sometimes they dance … sometimes they ride their bikes … but they don’t talk about issues. And when asked something, they say ‘Badruddin Ajmal’. What they are really saying is that they are not capable of running the government.” , He said.
He warned the BJP, which is seeking a second consecutive term, that its tactic would not work and that a united Congress-AIUDF would present a formidable challenge.
“Before, Congress and our vote used to be divided. This time, the vote will not be divided. Candidates for Congress will get Muslim votes, they will be victorious …”, he predicted.

In 2016, votes divided between Congress and AIUDF gave the BJP more than 20 seats. This month he told NDTV that he was confident of swaying 35 percent of the votes in favor of the alliance.
“I am not a liability to the alliance … I am an asset. The people of Assam are not afraid of me … they love Badruddin Ajmal,” he said, squashing rumors that he might become the Chief Minister.
“Who will be the Prime Minister? Congress will get more votes … so the Prime Minister will be from that party,” he said, adding: “Badruddin Ajmal’s role will be to keep promises and keep people together.”
Mr. Ajmal was also asked about allegations that he had asked Indian Muslims to have more children; He strongly denied these claims, as well as the BJP’s claims of a “communal” agenda.

The AIUDF is contesting about 19 seats as part of the opposition alliance.
The first phase of the three-phase Assam Assembly elections took place on March 27, with 47 seats voting. The second will be on April 1 and the third on April 6. Results are expected on May 2.
