Arya Rajendran, 21, who has successfully contested recent civic polls, is likely to become Thiruvananthapuram’s next mayor, CPI (M) sources said on Friday.

The Thiruvanathapuram District Marxist Party Secretariat recommended his name for the position at their meeting. The recommendation must be ratified by the party’s state secretariat, which will meet in the city on Saturday.

The secretary of state will make the announcements on five of the six total corporations by Saturday, the sources said.

Arya, a Bsc Maths sophomore at All Saints College here, had won the city corporation’s Mudavanmughal district, garnering 2,872 votes, 549 more than the rival congressional candidate.

An activist for the Student Federation of India (SFI), she is also the state president of Balasangam, the children’s wing of the left-wing party.

When contacted by the media about the recommendation, she said the party will make the right decision and that no one other than reporters has informed her.

Thiruvananthapuram Mayor K Sreekumar (CPI-M) had suffered a shocking defeat at the polls.
