New Delhi:
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will visit the Singhu border point between Delhi and Haryana today, which is one of the places where thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and other states have camped for more than a month in protest against three central agricultural laws. .
During his visit around 6 pm, Mr. Kejriwal will participate in hymn singing to commemorate the two-day “Shaheedi Diwas” being organized by the Delhi Government Punjabi Academy at the Guru Tej Bahadur Monument erected in Singhu. Shaheedi Diwas is observed to mark the martyrdom and sacrifice of the ninth Sikh Guru.
The Chief Minister of Delhi had also previously visited the monument where his government has made food and sanitation arrangements for farmers.
The last time he was on site, the first time a Chief Minister visited him, he said: “I have not come here as CM, but as ‘sevadar’. Farmers are in trouble today, we should support them.”
Mr. Kejriwal is among several opposition leaders who have extended their support for the farmers’ protest. Farmers have had several rounds of talks with the government so far, though all largely unsuccessful.
The new laws, aimed at ending middlemen and allowing farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country, have deeply upset farmers. Farmers say it will only result in the phasing out of mandis and the guaranteed minimum price paid by the government, leaving them at the mercy of the corporations.
