Arrest Warrant Against Former Punjab Chief Constable In 29-Year-Old Case

A Mohali court had dismissed Sumedh Singh Saini’s bail declaration on September 1

Chandigarh:

A Mohali court on Saturday issued an arrest warrant for former Punjab MP Sumedh Singh Saini in connection with the 1991 disappearance of Balwant Singh Multani.

The court ordered police to present Sumedh Saini by September 25, according to the order.

Sumedh Saini, the former Punjab Police Chief Executive Officer, remains elusive despite the Punjab Police special investigation team raiding several locations to arrest him.

Sumedh Saini, whose whereabouts are still unknown, was charged in May in connection with the 1991 disappearance of Balwant Multani while working as a junior engineer at the Chandigarh Tourism and Industrial Corporation.

On Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had dismissed Sumedh Saini’s early bail declaration in this matter.

The higher court had also dismissed Sumedh Saini’s second petition seeking to overturn an FIR in the case or transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A court in Mohali had dismissed his bail declaration on September 1.

Last month, the police had added a murder charge under Section 302 of the IPC to the FIR in the disappearance case of Balwant Multani after two former Chandigarh police officers, the former UT police inspector Jagir Singh and former ASI Kuldeep Singh, who are also co-defendants – become approver in the disappearance case.

On September 3, Punjab police claimed that Sumedh Saini “ran away” leaving behind Z plus security assigned to him.

Sumedh Saini had left his Chandigarh residence without the Punjab Police security personnel or security vehicles, including a jamming vehicle.

Balwant Multani, who lived in Mohali, was detained by the police after a terrorist attack against Sumedh Saini, who was then the chief superintendent of the police in Chandigarh, in 1991.

However, the police later claimed that Balwant Multani had escaped from the custody of the Qadian police in Gurdaspur.

Sumedh Saini and six other people were charged in the complaint by Balwant Multani’s brother.
