Relatives of Arnab Goswami, who was released on bail on November 11 in an incitement to a suicide case after being in judicial custody for a week, approached Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to ask him to investigate the Goswami security. Sonowal spoke with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday, who assured Assam’s chief minister of Goswami’s safety. Goswami was housed in Taloja Prison in Navi Mumbai. Members of his family claimed that his life was threatened. When he was transferred from the Covid-19 center of the Alibag prison to the Tiloja prison for allegedly using a mobile phone on Sunday, the 47-year-old journalist also claimed life threats. He said he was being attacked by the police. During his arrest on November 4 at his Lower Parel home, he complained of physical arrest. But an FIR was filed against Goswami and his relatives for trying to arrest the police.
On Wednesday afternoon, after a hearing that lasted for hours, the supreme court granted him bail in the 2018 case where designer Anvay Naik appointed him and two other people for non-payment of millions of rupees, which supposedly led him to end his life. His mother also dies by suicide. Although the case was closed in 2019, it was reopened by order of the Maharashtra Interior Minister.
Uddhav Thackeray has assured Sonowal of Goswami’s safety, Assam CM tweeted before Goswami was released on bail.
“I spoke with CM Shri Uddhav Thackeray ji from Maharashtra and requested the appropriate security arrangements for the renowned journalist Arnab Goswami. I spoke to him as members of Mr. Goswami’s family approached me and implied that he was not being provided with sufficient security, ”Sonowal tweeted.
