Arnab Goswami was transferred to Taloja Central Prison, alleging a threat to his life

Arnab was arrested on November 4 in connection with a case of suicidal complicity in 2018.

Arnab Goswami, managing director and editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was transferred to Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai by officials citing security reasons. Arnab had been housed at the Alibaug Government School, which became a quarantine center since his arrest on November 4. While being taken to jail in a police van, Arnab claimed that he was pushed and assaulted and that there was a threat to his life.

Arnab Goswami was arrested at his residence in a suicide accessory case by Raigad police under IPC section 306 (suicide complicity) in a 2018 case involving the suicide of an interior designer named Anvay Naik. Raigad police had closed this case in 2019, but it was reopened in May 2020 after Anvay’s daughter Adnya approached Maharashtra’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh. The case was reopened and turned over to the CID for further investigation.

On Sunday morning, when Arnab was transferred out of the Alibaug Government School, where he had been staying for the last four days, he was seen shouting that his life was threatened and that he was not allowed to speak to his lawyers. “My life is threatened, my life is threatened, I am not allowed to speak to my lawyers, they pushed me and attacked me this morning, they said they would not allow me to speak to my lawyers, please tell the people of the country my life is threatened.”

On Saturday, without giving Arnab Goswami relief, the Bombay High Court reserved its order on his bail statement after his arrest by Maharashtra police in the case. Simultaneously, a division bench comprised of Judge SS Shinde and Judge MS Karnik allowed Goswami to approach the lower court to request a regular bond under CrPC Sec 439, which can be decided within four days of the hearing of all The interested parts.

The Raigad Session Court released for hearing on Monday a plea by Raigad police challenging an order from Chief Judge Sunaina Pingle granting Goswami 14 days of judicial custody. The police have sought his custody.
