Arnab Goswami case ‘police assault’: the court of sessions will hear today the declarations of advance bail


A Mumbai court of sessions will hear pre-arrest bail statements presented by journalist Arnab Goswami and his wife Samyabrata Ray for allegedly assaulting a policewoman in a criminal case registered against the couple by Mumbai police.

The police had filed an FIR against Republic TV editor-in-chief Goswami, his wife and son at the NM Joshi Marg police station. The alleged “assault” took place on the morning of November 4 when a police team went to Goswami’s home to arrest him in connection with an alleged case of complicity in suicide in 2018. Currently, only Goswami and Ray have filed. advance bond requests. They have been registered under sections 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (assault to dissuade a public servant from doing his duty), 504 (intentional insult to cause breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and under the Damage to Public Property Act.

On November 12, the day after the Supreme Court granted Goswami bail, the court of sessions adjourned the guilty plea hearing to November 23, which was postponed until December 1.

The case concerns the alleged death by suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in May 2018. In his suicide note, Naik had accused Goswami and two other people of failing to collectively pay their dues for a value of Rs 5.40 crore. While the case was closed last year, it was reopened earlier this year after Naik’s daughter approached Maharashtra’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh.

It was in connection with this case, Arnab was arrested last month and taken to a municipal school in Alibaug, where he was in judicial custody. He was later transferred to Taloja Prison in Raigad district for allegedly using a mobile phone while in custody.
