New Delhi:
Six lieutenant colonels and an Indian army major were among 23 people named by the IWC in an investigation into corruption involving conscription for the force on Monday after searches at 30 locations in 13 cities.
The defendants include 17 members of the military in total and six others with “allegations of bribery and irregularities in the recruitment of officers and other ranks through the Service Selection Board,” the CBI said.
The agency said the case was registered based on a complaint from the office of the Additional General Directorate, Discipline and Surveillance, Branch of the Adjutant General, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defense (Army).
The CBI received a complaint last month that staff on duty were involved in accepting bribes to help candidates pass medical examinations at the Base Hospital in New Delhi.
An Army Air Defense Corps Lt. Col. Bhagwan, the alleged mastermind of the recruiting scam, is among those named, they said.
The complaint said Lieutenant Colonel Bhagwan, currently on a school leave, and Naib Subedar Kuldeep Singh also received bribes from potential officer candidates at SSB centers.
Searches were carried out today at 30 locations, including the Base Hospital, Cantonment, other army establishments, civilian areas covering 13 cities, the IWC said.
Searched locations include Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Guwahati, Kapurthala, Bathinda, Kaithal, Palwal, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Vishakhapatnam, Jorhat, and Chirangon.
The searches led to the recovery of several incriminating documents that are being studied, the agency said.
