Anna Hakobyan, wife of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, announced on Tuesday that military training has begun and will soon join the Armenian forces fighting Azerbaijan in the highly contested Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In a post shared on Facebook, Hakobyan, 42, said that a 13-member squad of women, including her, will soon begin military training exercises, AFP reported.

“In a few days we will leave to help protect our borders,” said the post. “Neither our country nor our dignity will be handed over to the enemy.”

This will be his second military training course since the resurgence of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Last month, Hakobyan and a group of Karabakh women underwent a seven-day combat training course at a military base, where they learned how to use weapons and ammunition, AFP reported.

The most recent outbreak of fighting between the two warring nations erupted in September and has so far killed more than 1,000 people. Three ceasefire agreements, attempted separately by Russia and the United States, have failed as tensions continue to rise in the region.

Earlier this month, Hakobyan, editor-in-chief of the Armenian Times newspaper, sent a letter to the First Ladies of the United States, Canada, France, Brazil, Lebanon, Singapore, Lithuania, Argentina and Vietnam, urging them to “recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, whose civilian population is under attack by Azerbaijan ”.

His 20-year-old son Ashot Pashinyan also volunteered to fight Azeri forces in Karabakh, AFP reported.
