Rahman was very close to his mother and in one of his interviews, he had revealed that it was his mother who realized that he would take up music in the future. He had told CT in a previous interview, “She has musical instincts. Spiritually, she is much taller than me in the way she thinks and makes decisions. For example, her decision to make me learn music. She made me quit. school in Class XI and learning music. I was convinced that music is the line for me. ”
He had also added that hers was not like a relationship in the movies where mother and son constantly hug. But at the same time, they had immense respect for each other. Rahman (then Dileep) was raised by his mother Kareema Begum (Kasthuri Sekhar) after his father, music director RK Shekhar, passed away when he was only nine years old.
