Actress Anushka Sharma has written a forceful note on Instagram, amid ongoing protests against the recent gang rape of Hathras. The actor wrote that “in our society, having a male child is considered a privilege.”
Calling this notion a ‘myopic vision’, Anushka wrote: “Of course, it is no more privilege than having a girl, but the fact is that this supposed privilege has been viewed incorrectly and with an extremely myopic vision. The only “privilege” is that one has the opportunity to raise a boy in a way that respects a girl. That is your DUTY as the parent of society. Therefore, do not consider it a PRIVILEGE. “
She added: “The gender of the child does not make you privileged, but it is actually the responsibility you owe to society to raise a child so well that women feel safe and protected.”
On Thursday, the actress had expressed surprise at the rape in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur, which occurred almost immediately after the Hathras incident. On Instagram, she posted: “Almost no time has passed and we are hearing of another brutal rape! ?! In what world do these monsters believe they can do this to a young life?

Anushka recently reacted strongly after her name was again drawn into a discussion about her husband’s cricket form, cricketer Virat Kohli. After Sunil Gavaskar commented that Virat was unprepared for the level of competition because his only batting practice during the lockdown came from Anushka, the actor wrote an outraged post on social media, calling Gavaskar’s comments “sexist.”
Anushka is expecting her first child with Virat. She announced the happy news with a social media post in August. “And then there were three of us! It will arrive in January 2021, ”she wrote.
