A fortnight ago, the animal had gone astray in a residential society in the plush area of Kothrud, reportedly from the Mulshi forest area.
However, the animal, which ran from one area to another as locals flocked to capture it and click on photos, died hours after the forestry team reassured it and managed to rescue it.
Punekars came under severe criticism for the way the entire operation was handled and executed, including the authorities’ inability to keep passersby and onlookers at bay. The gaur was already wounded and the crowd and commotion had added to his stress.
The gaur has been listed as ‘vulnerable’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 1986.
