Another cyclone watch for Tamil Nadu, Kerala: Heavy to very heavy rain forecast


The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued another cyclone watch for Tamil Nadu, which was hit by Cyclone Nivar last week, and Kerala. The meteorological department has said that a deep depression in the southwest and southeast adjacent to the Bay of Bengal was centered on Tuesday, which is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours.

Most likely moving west-northwest and crossing the Sri Lankan coast near Trincomalee between the evening and night of December 2, emerging into the Gulf of Mannar and the contiguous area of ​​Comorin on the morning of December 3 and move west towards the southern coast of Tamil Nadu. The system was about 900km southeast of Kanyakumari at 12pm Tuesday. The maximum wind speed during the storm will be 70 to 80 km / h with gusts of 90 km / h.

Here’s what IMD said:

1. Isolated heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur in southern Tamil Nadu on December 1 and 4 and in southern Kerala on December 2 and 4.

2. Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai in Tamil Nadu and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha in southern Kerala are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy falls on 2 and 3 December .

3. Northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Mahe and Karaikal and northern Kerala will also witness heavy or very heavy rains in isolated locations on December 2-3.

4. Heavy rains are likely to occur in isolated locations on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh on December 2-3, and over Lakshadweep on December 3-4.

5. The IMD has also ordered a total suspension of fishing operations until December 4 in the region.

6. The weather agency said that fishermen are advised not to venture into the southeast of the Bay of Bengal on December 1.

7. They should also avoid the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and along and off the east coast of Sri Lanka from December 1-3.

8. IMD added that they should not enter the Comorin area, the Gulf of Mannar and the southern coasts of Tamil Nadu-Kerala from 2 to 4 December.

9. The Lakshadweep-Maldives area and the area adjacent to the southeastern Arabian Sea should be avoided from 3-4 December.
