ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran khan it has claimed that there is “a lot of anger” within the armed forces over the verbal “attacks” against senior military commanders by the leaders of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an anti-government alliance of 11 opposition parties.
In an interview with local Samaa television on Friday, Khan said the ousted prime minister Nawaz sharif, in several of his speeches delivered via a video link from London, has alleged that the Chief of the Army, General Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI chief Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed had orchestrated his overthrow in 2017 and rigged the 2018 general election to “impose the incompetent and selected Imran Khan” on Pakistan.
“I must praise Gen Bajwa here. Attack an Army chief in this way; a reaction comes from the Army, ”he said. “There would be a strong reaction if someone else were in charge of the army,” he said, adding that Bajwa was “tolerating this for the sake of democracy.”
Khan further said that the opposition accused him of being a “puppet.” “It means that they (the opposition) were willing to speak only with the security establishment. This means that they are pressuring the Army to eliminate a democratic government, ”he said while describing the opposition’s anti-government movement.
“This is happening because the PDM leaders had realized that it would not grant them any leniency in their corruption cases,” he added.
By asking the Pakistani military to remove a democratic government, the prime minister said, he believes that article 6 of the Constitution applies to them. “This is a case of high treason,” he said. Khan further claimed that the opposition’s backing plan was to “blackmail” the military into overthrowing the Army and ISI leaders.
The prime minister reiterated his accusations that the PDM is supported by anti-democratic forces such as the former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani.
Why is Nawaz Sharif so popular in India? There he has become a hero. It is doing what India is doing. It constantly degrades Pakistan and destroys its economy, ”he said.
He said the establishment had assisted the PML-N chief in the 2013 elections, but their ties were strained because the establishment failed to support him in 2018.
In an attempt to remove the Khan government, the PDM has vowed to march in Islamabad in February and also present mass resignations from federal and provincial assemblies in a timely manner. In its first phase of the campaign against the government, the PDM had organized demonstrations in six major cities of the country. His last rally was held last week in Lahore.
