The Andhra Pradesh government decided on Thursday to ban online games like rummy and poker that pushed young people down the wrong path.
The state cabinet that met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy made the decision to ban online gambling, Information Minister Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani) said.
Briefing journalists at the end of the cabinet meeting, the minister said that online gambling has become a vice that is harming young people by “tricking” them.
“So we have decided to ban all online gambling to protect young people,” Nani said.
According to the Cabinet decision, online gambling organizers would be jailed for one year, in addition to being punished, for the first time.
The jail sentence would be up to two years with a fine for the second offense. In addition, those caught playing online games will receive a six-month prison term, the minister added.
